What can one pig do? In the lush fields of Cagayan Valley, it can change everything.
For families who’ve spent years struggling to put food on the table, who’ve watched their children go to bed hungry, who’ve felt the crushing weight of poverty with no clear way out, a pig isn’t just a livestock. It's an opportunity, a crucial key—one that provides hope for a better future.
Not a Handout but a Hand-Up
The pig-raising program in Cagayan Valley isn’t about charity. It’s about empowerment. Restoring dignity. We give families the tools, training, and resources they need to generate their own sustainable income—not just for today but for years to come.
Here’s how it works:
- Families receive comprehensive training in sustainable pig farming practices—everything from breeding techniques to feed management to disease prevention.
- They’re taught how to raise agua de madre crops and build optimal shelters (made of natural materials) for the pigs to live in.
- They also learn the business side of things: how to track expenses, what to do with the piglets when they’re grown—in short, how to turn this pig-raising operation into a reliable source of income.
Then they receive piglets and the supplies they need to get started. But the support doesn’t stop there. GAiN PH provides ongoing membership by answering questions, troubleshooting challenges, and walking alongside families as they build their operations.
It’s empowerment. A handout instead of a hand-up.
Empowering Families with the Skills and Resources
Families who once worried about where their next meal would come from can now plan better for the future. They can plan for their children’s education; they can build their own businesses. Parents who felt trapped by poverty, communities that struggled with economic instability are now seeing growth and resilience.
This is what sustainable development looks like. Dignity instead of dependency. Thriving instead of just surviving.
Paying It Forward
This pig-raising livelihood program isn’t something that ends when families receive their piglets. The support goes on, and they pay it forward to others in need. When their pigs are grown and have piglets of their own, they hand some piglets to another family who will be starting their own pig-raising. This way, the cycle keeps going forward and more families receive help.
