More Than Scholarships: Building a Community of Future Leaders

For the past few weeks, GAiN Philippines scholarship recipients have been gathering for leadership development and community bonding camps. We had a total of :

  • 21 from Montalban
  • 50 from Tacloban
  • 17 from Bicol

What unfolded these past few days has been so much more than just about workshops and activities.

It was about connection. Community. Raising the next generation of young leaders. And discovering that they’re not walking this journey alone.

The Challenge of Education in the Philippines

To understand the significance of these camps, you need to understand the weight that these students carry.

Most of them are the first in their families to pursue higher education. Many come from families facing severe financial hardship—families where every peso counts, where education often feels like an impossible luxury.

These students carry with them the weight of being their family’s hope. The pressure of succeeding despite overwhelming odds. The fear that one misstep, one failed exam, one unexpected expense could undo everything they’ve worked hard for.

And that’s not the only thing they carry. Aside from navigating academic challenges and financial stress, there’s the burden of being the one their entire family is counting on.

Building a Community, Not Just Providing Scholarships

The GAiN PH program is more than just about tuition. From the beginning, we’ve always understood that financial support alone isn’t enough. Students need community. Mentorship. They need to know they’re not alone.

Camps like this allow for leadership development workshops, team-building activities, and honest conversations about the challenges the students face and the dreams they have.

Students succeed when they have support systems—peer networks, mentorship, a sense of belonging. These aren’t small things. These connections the students make with each other lend to the support they need to continue with their education. For some, these communities make all the difference between dropping out and graduating, between surviving and thriving.

Leadership Development: Discovering Their Potential

Through workshops and interactive sessions, scholars explored what it means to lead with integrity, compassion, and purpose. They learned practical skills like communication, problem solving, and collaboration. They were challenged to see themselves as more than just students struggling to get through school, but as future leaders who will transform their communities.

They aren’t just scholarship recipients. They’re future teachers, healthcare workers, engineers, entrepreneurs, community organizers. They’re the ones who will go back to their families and communities and initiate change.

What’s Next for the GAiN PH Scholars

The camps may have ended, but the impact has only just begun.

This coming school year, the scholars will return to their schools with renewed energy, deeper connections, and a stronger purpose. They have the community. They have the mentorship. They have each other.

As they succeed—as they graduate, enter the workforce, and give back to their communities—the impact will multiply. They’ll become the teachers who inspire the next generation. Healthcare workers who serve with compassion. Entrepreneurs who create jobs. Leaders who transform their communities. They, in turn, will bring hope and healing to those in need.
